Cheaper Car Insurance PremiumsYou can often get cheaper car insurance premiums by considering the following factors when deciding which policy is the most suitable for your specific car insurance needs :
Shop around
Car insurance is a very competitive business with many brokers and 'direct' insurers trying to win your business by offering cheaper car insurance premiums. It's best to obtain quotates from three or more providers and you can also talk to local brokers, as well as the big 'direct' firms. Quotations are available easily and quickly over the Internet or telephone.
No Claims Bonus
A No Claims Bonus (NCB) will make your car insurance premiums cheaper by up to 67%. You need to keep a clean driving record over a number of years in order to get cheaper car insurance premiums from your NCB.
Excess payments
Cheaper car insurance premiums are available if you agree to pay the first part of any claim. You can often increase the Excess on a policy to reduce premiums. ('£100 excess' means the premium will be less if you pay the first £100).
Specialist Car Insurance Companies
Some companies specialise in particular kinds of cars or drivers and you may benefit from cheaper car insurance premiums by using they specialist knowledge. You may get discounted rates for young drivers or the over 50s as well as for drivers who only do a low mileage. Some professionals (e.g. teachers, nurses) may be able to access special preferential discount schemes as might members of trade unions.
Restricting Cover
If you restrict your car insurance cover to a single driver, you may find that cheaper car insurance premiums become available. Adding your partner to a policy increases premiums by about 5 - 15% whilst cover for 'any driver' pushes up the car insurance premium by up to 25%.
